Swing Analysis - Alvaro Quiros

Posted By: Jim Hardy on 9/29/2009

It was during the PGA Championship last month that I first saw Alvaro Quiros and got to study his swing.  He has a wonderful one-plane swing that certainly dispels the notion that one-plane swings are not powerful.  I have long chuckled at the detractors that say the one-plane swing is accurate but not powerful.  I do not know what they are looking at when they see Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Anthony Kim, Hunter Mahan, to name only a few one-planers who are very powerful.  I can only hope this “lack of power notion” goes away.  I have analyzed his swing for you to point out the various movements of his one-plane swing that not only make him a one-planer, but also make him a powerful one.  I apologize for the quality of the video.  We obtained the video from internet and the quality is not the best.   However it is good enough for our intentions.  Hope you find it as interesting as I did.  Please note that the file size is rather large so it might take a few seconds to load completely depending on your internet connection.

    • Very educational analysis. Thank you. Somethings that you mention are what I have been doing and now I feel validated. I believe when I was trying to be perfectly "text book" that I was uncomfortable and feeling unnatural. Seeing you point out what was imperative makes me know I'm on the right track.

    • Jim: Excellent analysis. telling us when the rigt arm straightens and the movement of the hips is validation for me that I am on the right track. You have made my golf game so much more enjoyable Thank you very much. bob

    • Most excellent to be able to witness this. I intend to make it a point to use this next time I'm studying my own swing. Thanks, Jim Tim

    • Superb. This helps more than you can imagine. Thanks, and please provide some more including close to textbook swings, and some hybrids with explanation of why it works and what the potential problems are. Thanks.

    • Jim: Just took the chicago class-great stuff--can really see what my left hip needs to do based on this analysis and how steep I could actually get my shoulders through impact and still be "just fine"---ala your comments about--"as long as left hip turns back and around---you can make shoulders as steep as you want"....Tx! • This was very eductional. Excellent analysis, especially about the right arm straightening after impact. That means that it was as a piston in the up position, before its energy transferring thrust in this case into the back of the ball.

    • Great stuff Jim. Do you think you could make Quiros even better. What would you do to help him ensure his place on Europes Ryder Cup team ?
